Friday Food Safari.

April 5th, 2008

Every Wednesday night, at 7.30, the family gather around the telly to watch the SBS show Food Safari. Each week the lovely Maeve spends 30 minutes discovering the traditions surrounding food from a specific part of the world, and she oohs and aahs over every mouthful. This week the safari took us through the flavours of India, and oh boy did it look good. The boys were fascinated by the oven used to cook the bread and couldn’t believe the number of spices used in each dish. They then commented that they had never been to an Indian restaurant and wouldn’t that be fun! So we have now decided that every Friday night we are going to go on our own Food Safari to a restaurant in the style of the show for that week.

Last night our first Friday Night Food Safari took us to the local Indian restaurant! And what a treat it was. We decided to have a mini banquet as none of us had a clue what we would like from the menu. Now I know this is going to sound odd to some that we have not been “out for Indian” before, but we have now. The boys loved the sizzling starters and when they put the cutest little mini burners on the table to keep the curry dishes hot they couldn’t believe their eyes.

Over all they liked everything, the curried vegetables were just a bit too hot but all the rest was wonderful. My favourite was the Butter Chicken and the pistachio ice-cream! The restaurant had a beautiful décor and the kids loved the music. We discussed lots of things about India while we sat around the table and all in all it was a great evening.  We even considered watching a Bollywood movie when we got home but settled for Bride and Prejudice instead.  And yes, “change the ligthbulb and pat the dog” did enter into the conversation more than once.  Go on, try it, left hand up changing a light bulb while your right hand pats the dog!  Get it?

Next week Maeve is doing Greek, I can’t wait!

Just a quick ripple update, due to last nights Safari no crocheting took place but I’m back on it today and hope to get to 50 rows by nights end.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone.

Sounds like your Friday night Food Safari was wonderful. Guess we can forgive the lack of crocheting. I’m right there with you with the pistachio ice cream. Actually, I don’t know if there’s a flavor I don’t like. My dad used to bring home licorice ice cream and banana ice cream. It’s been a long time, but I remember what a treat it was.

Love the idea of a Friday night Food Safari! I have only ever been to an Indian restaurant once and I totally loved the experience. My Todd is not a man who likes to eat out at all, so a restaurant meal is a rare treat. I thought Bride and Prejudice was a rather good movie, and great fun!
