Maddy’s Glass House

Many years ago, just like everyone else, I crocheted a lap blanket using the traditional coloured squares.   By mid way through the project I realised I hated nasty nylon yarn; I also hated every colour that I had chosen.  I foolishly used neon, yes neon, YUK!.  At this stage in my crocheting career I also learned a very cruel lesson on colour lots and how they are not all the same and if you want continuity in your knitting you must buy enough wool to finish the project.  It took what felt like years to complete and fell to bits a couple of months after I finished it!  At this point in time I will apologise for what you are about to see…

Anyhoo… over the past few years I’ve seen lots and lots of posts about beautiful ripple crochet blankets and I’ve drooled over all of them.  I’ve told myself “no, remember the squares” and just kept putting it out of my mind.  Well I can’t stop the voices in my head any more!  Not the weird voices, the oness that say “wool, you need to buy wool”.   Over at Attick24 the lovely Lucy has posted about her ripple blanket, Posy also made a beautiful ripple blanket and so did Kirsty.  They all chose gorgeous colours; wonderful yarns and of course they all look sensational.  That ripple effect is so very appealing; it’s almost hypnotic!  So I have decided to go for it!

I’m off to Spotlight (huge craft store) today to get myself a nice new hook and some lovely, non-nylon, yarn.  I’ve browsed the Flickr group called Ripple Along for colour inspiration and decided on autumn tones of cream, rust, khaki and burgundy.  This may all change once I get to the shop and find I like the pinks or greens or oranges more.

I’m also going to set myself some very stricked rules of engagement.  I will crochet every evening after dinner for at least an hour, and once I get going I will do at least 6 rows a night.  This blanket must be finished by mid winter and will not be put away until it’s done.   I hate starting a project and then not getting it finished, it becomes a burden, a nasty little secret hiding in the corner, watching me day in, day out.  Oh sorry, voices again, but it’s not going to happen this time, this time I will produce something to be proud of!

OK, I’m off to the shops, and I hope each and every one of you have a wonderful weekend, filled with love and peace and lots of left over chocolate.

Ah, Maddy, once you are under the spell of a ripple there is nothing to do but surrender! You almost have me contemplating a third one :)

I love the loook of those ripple blankets but I can’t crochet! Have fun making yours.

I like your colors. I have never done a ripple one. I may have to try it, but first I have to finish the quilt I started.
I like your square one. I think it’s pretty.

Ah Maddy, when we’re young and foolish we use “exotic” colors (oops,) colours in our crafting. Testing the waters with a “different” kind of yarn. We experiment with new techniques in joining those squares. Giving it a really heavy-duty road tes. Submitting it to all manner of abuse. What we have created must pass muster. Then, one day, we wake up and say to ourselves, “What in the hell was I thinking?”

uhhhh, that should be road test.

I love the colours that you have picked. My sister and I taught ourselves to crochet when we were teens. Our mother was a knitter. She never did quite get the hang of crochet, although she did try. I love a good ripple throw!
