Maddy’s Glass House

While the sun shone.

August 26th, 2007

Yesterday was the most amazing day, it’s still winter here but the sun came out and the wind was warm.  I had intended to do a little gardening but in the end we did gardening all day, we even mulched the beds and went to the tip, what a day.  We planned to finish the day with a BBQ but by 6pm I was so tired and filthy that we had pizza instead but if the sun comes out today the BBQ will be back on for lunch.

So what did I get up too …

The veggie patch was dug over and new trellis put in for the peas to climb.

A fine selection or herbs and veg was made.  Celery, five types of tomatoes, peas, fennel, carrot, sage and Italian parsley.  The carrots are called “Bunny Balls” and I first saw them over at Irish Sally Garden and then yesterday while shopping there they were so I thought it must be fate and got them.  The fennel and celery are new for me but I know that these will be so usefull in the kitchen.

Then the fun bit, the planting out and watering in.  Herbs at one end and veg at the other.

While I was hard at work planting out my husband was off to the tip to empty the trailer and then get it re-filled with lovely mulch.  Here in Australia if you don’t mulch your garden beds well they dry out very quickly in summer and you can loose a lot of your plants.  Mid winter is the perfect time of year for mulching while the soil is damp.

My constant companion throughout was Red the gardening puppy.  He really enjoyed gardening and all the hilarious fun of stealing my sunglasses, secateurs and spade and nibbling on my newly purchased plants, oh the fun of it all, it was all so very Benny Hill (insert large amount of sarcasm here).

By days end the garden was looking wonderful and I was tired and dirty but very pleased with the end results.  I am really looking forward to harvesting the fennel, its new to me but I have a few recipes I’m dying to try.

And so here we are, Sunday morning.  The house is dark and silent, everyone is still tucked up in bed, I’m enjoying my mug of coffee while blog hopping and catching up on whats happening out there in the big wide world.  The sun is just popping over the horizon … the day begins.

It seems so strange that you are planting and we are harvesting. I’ve got sweetcorn, pumpkins, courgettes, plum tomatoes, beans and peas all ready soon as well as loads of lettuces. What month will yours be ready?

  3. Maddy

G’day Jo, I think they should all be ready by Christmas, the tomatoes may be earlier and the beans. I’ve not grown fenel or celery before so not sure there. Lovely to hear from you.

Great work on the vegie garden Maddy. I’ll have to ask your advice when I finally get one up and running here. We’ve pulled out a few old beds and rockeries that just had shrubs and good places for snakes to hide, with the idea of using the space for vegies. It’s interesting for me to see what’s in this new garden of mine. There is a fruit tree in bud, two citrus, lavender and rosemary, but beyond that, I’m pretty much stumped. But it’s the first garden of my very own I’ve had, so it’s time to learn. xk

OOooh the round carrots, I’m so excited you are trying them! I liked them because they mean’t minimal digging preparation as compared to ordinary carrots … and they looked so darn cute!
